Boozy Journalism at Rocco’s

Just when I thought Orlando couldn’t handle any more Taco Tuesdays, we get another Mexican restaurant, but I can’t complain. I think I love this place. Maybe its all the free drinks I got.

Rocco’s Tacos and Tequila Bar, owned by Rocco Mangel and Big Time Restaurant Group, opened its 5th and largest location on Sand Lake Rd. The 8,500 square ft. lakefront location (it’s in the former Samba Room building) boasts an indoor and outdoor dining section as well as a bar named Laine, after his mother.

The restaurant hosts Taco & Tequila Tuesdays which is an all you can eat tacos including chicken, pork, steak, beef, mushroom, shrimp and mahi for $14.95 along with $5 featured margaritas.

During the opening, they had an open bar and guests took advantage of this, as well as the free appetizers like tuna ceviche, chicken wings, chicken flautas and tableside-made guacamole, amongst other appetizers. Unfortunately, we couldn’t sample from the signature plates such as Molcajete Seafood, Enchiladas Mole Poblando or the Bistec con Chiles Rajas.

The atmosphere at the restaurant was lively, the staff was excellent (despite how busy the restaurant was) and it seemed like everyone knew each other.

Guests can sample from the largest tequila menu in the Southeast U.S. (over 250 different tequilas) including Rocco’s own co-brand with Milagro Tequila. And if they’re lucky, they’ll get to see Rocco’s famous “tequila dance” on the bar top, wearing shiny white, patent leather dancing shoes and pouring Patron in guests’ mouths.

“I moved to Florida 15 years ago with $200 in my pocket,” Rocco said. “This is my place now.” Rocco moved from New York, where he was born and raised.

Rocco, a philanthropist at heart, was also raising money for the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida. “If you donate $50,” Rocco said, “you will get a free bottle of tequila!”

Rocco’s Taco and Tequila is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
